The Round Simulator: A 3-Minute Grip and Guard Endurance Workout

Most fighters don't lose late rounds because of their lungs. They lose them because their arms get heavy, their hands drop and their guard opens. The Round Simulator is a short protocol that trains exactly that: grip, forearm and shoulder endurance at guard height.

The protocol

  1. Warm up (3 minutes). Shadowbox lightly, roll your wrists and shoulders.
  2. Round 1 (3 minutes). Hold your trainer at guard height and spin the handles forward without stopping. Elbows in, chin down.
  3. Rest (1 minute). Shake your arms out and breathe.
  4. Round 2 (3 minutes). Same position, spin backwards.
  5. Rest (1 minute).
  6. Round 3 (3 minutes). Alternate 30 seconds spinning at guard height with 30 seconds of extending and retracting your arms like straight punches.

How to progress

If you can't finish a full round, start with 1-minute rounds and add 30 seconds every session. Once 3 rounds feel controlled, turn the resistance dial up one level. The goal is not speed, it's keeping your hands at guard height while your forearms burn.

How often

Two or three times a week, after technical work or on light days, is plenty. Treat it like conditioning, not like a max-strength session.

Want a tool built for this? The Twistrike grip and forearm trainer has 5 resistance levels and is designed to be held at guard height.
